The Hanseatic city of Wesel
History & attractions
In 1227 Wesel received city rights and the economy flourished. Since 1407 Wesel has been a Hanseatic town on the Lower Rhine. Remains of this important epoch are the Willibrordi Cathedral and the historic town hall facade. The location on the Rhine and Lippe was strategically favorable. After sieges of the town, the Prussian electors and kings built the largest fortress in the Rhineland in the 17th and 18th centuries. Berliner Tor and the citadel complex date from this period. Today the citadel houses a cultural center, the LVR-Niederrheinmuseum, and the Städtisches Museum.
In 2009 the 770-meter-long Niederrheinbrücke bridge was completed. It is an imposing structure that is lit up in the evening.

During WWII, Wesel was almost completely destroyed. You can find out what was left standing and how the town has changed on a city tour. We recommend the free "Zeitfenster Wesel" app which allows you to look into the past during your city tour through Wesel.
